Andy Reed OBE

Andy Reed was the Labour & Co-operative MP for Loughborough between 1997-2010. During this time he was an active member of Christians in Parliament (Formerly the Parliamentary Christian Fellowship), where he was Chair for a number of years and Chaired the National Prayer Breakfast in 2001.

Described by the Guardian as a Muscular Christian during his resignation from the government over Iraq. Andy was heavily involved in the Christian Socialist Movement before entering parliament and remains active still in the organisation in its new guise – Christians on the Left.

Andy became known for his passion for tackling the root causes of poverty at home and internationally and for promoting the place of Faith in Public life – but with grace and understanding!

He was Secretary of the All party Jubilee 2000 group and remained Secretary of the groups successor – The Debt Aid & Trade group until he lost in 2010. He mainteins these links with Micah Challenge.

Throughout the 13 years as MP for Loughborough Andy met weekly with a small cross party group of Christian MPs, affectionately known as G6. Together they also produced a pamphlet 'Faith in the Future'. The MPs are Gary Streeter MP (Con), Stephen Timms MP (Lab), Jeffrey Donaldson MP (DUP), Caroline Spelman MP (Con) and Steve Webb MP (Lib Dem)

He has spoken at many Christian conferences around the world on engaging faith in public life. In particular he has worked with the Bible Society in Ethiopia, Palestine, Nigeria,India and China. He has travelled with Interserve and Tearfund in Kyrgysztan, Uzbekistan and Uganda. He has worked on democracy workshops with Christians in Nigeria and Kenya with Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW)

Closer to home he has been a member of the Evangelical Alliance Council from 2008-2014. A patron of Bless with Gerard Kelly and on the Council of Reference for CSW and Interserve. He helped lead the fight against the extension of Sunday Trading through the work of Keep Time for Children – leading the argument for a fair and balanced work life balance for all.

He was on the Council of Reference for Oasis, The Relationship Foundation, and Keep Time for Children. He was a regular on Premier Christian Radio. and UCB Radio.

Since leaving front line politics Andy has continued to promote faith and politics through his work at his B-engaged project.

As an adopted child Andy has been pleased to support the formation of the Charity Home for Good – led principally by Krish Kandiah.

Andy also worked with Interserve in Central Asia and helped promote their Step into Justice campaigns alongside Emma Rigby (Hollyoaks)and Tabitha Webb (Phantom of the Opera). He is now on their Council of Reference. They are a B-engaged partner.

In 2008 he joined the Council of the Evangelical Alliance He had served on their Faith and Nation Commission. In 2009 he helped launch and participate in their campaign 'Simplify'

He works with Micah Challenge – "as I live my life by Micah 6:8." he says. International development has always been a priority and therefore he also promotes the work of Tearfund.

Andy has been a regular speaker at Christian events like Spring Harvest and Greenbelt.

He worked with CARE by providing a place for their intern programme for several years.

He worked with Jim Wallis from the US promoting his book God's Politics during its UK launch.

He has authored a number of Pamphlets on Faith & Politics and worked with Krish Kandiah on the book 'Just Politics' launched ahead of the General Election in 2010.

In 2012 Andy joined the Board of World Vision UK where he leads on public policy and advocacy.

In work Andy now is involved with Christians in Sport where he also leads and Chairs the Church response to the Rugby World Cup in 2015 – @engage2015

After many years at St Mary's Church in Sileby in Leicestershire Andy now worships at Open Heaven Church in Loughborough.
